Nail Art on the Runway at Toronto Fashion Week

1

Images from Toronto’s spring/summer 2016 fashion week are all the proof we need to know that nail art isn’t going anywhere fast (thank god!).

I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of the backstage action this week at World Mastercard Toronto Fashion Week and spoke with Rita Remark, essie Canada’s Lead Nail Artist & Global Lead Educator, about the looks she created for top Canadian designers – Mikhael Kale, Matthew Gallagher, Hayley Elsaesser, Lucian Matis and Mackage.

Nail art ranges from subtle and understated to bold and eccentric.

Mikhael Kale

Mikhael Kale‘s spring/summer 2016 collection took florals to new heights, pushing the boundaries on a seasonal classic. Using adore-a-ball, matte about you topcoat, and gel setter topcoat, Rita Remark, essie Canada’s Lead Nail Artist & Global Lead Educator, created an avant-garde look to complement the collection.

Matthew Gallagher

As a velvety, creamy accent to Matthew Gallagher’s collection, Rita Remark created a nude manicure with a twist. This look used topless & barefoot with matte about you topcoat – inspired by the way a textured matte polish over a creamy nude resembles cake fondant.

Hayley Elsaesser

To mirror the spring/summer 16 “eclectic circus” themed collection by Hayley Elsaesser, Rita Remark created a look that reflected a pattern straight from one of the garments. Using jiggle hi, jiggle lo as a base, and the new silk watercolours (available Spring 2016 at mass retailers), in the shades art new beau, muse myself, love sheen, pen & inky, highest bidder and no shrinking violet over top to create a rainbow gradient across each finger.

Lucian Matis

To emulate the very feminine, supermodel vibe of Lucian Matis’ collection, Rita Remark created a beautiful, but subtle, graphic nail. A blunt, exaggerated U-shape shape along the tip of the nail using blanc, layered with mademoiselle to soften the contrast.

Mackage

Mackage‘s Spring/Summer 2016 collection can be described as industrial and rugged, yet polished and streamlined. So for the nail look, Rita Remark created a graphic, refined, negative-space mani, using naughty nautical, licorice, and master plan.

While all these looks inspire me to get my nails done, I think the graphic design for the Mackage collection is my favourite. If you’re looking for something more subtle then perhaps the Mikhael Kale look is more up your street!

Until next time,
